MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID – KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES

A practical skills and awareness course designed to provide delegates with:

• A deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing, including their own
• Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
• Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
• Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
• Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to appropriate support

Research and evaluation show that taking part in an MHFA course:

• Raises awareness and mental health literacy
• Reduces stigma around mental ill health
• Boosts knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues
• Promotes early intervention which supports recovery

On completion all qualified mental health first aiders are provided with:

• A manual to refer to whenever they need it
• A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support their own mental health
• A certificate of attendance to say they are a Mental Health First Aider
• A copy of the Line Managers’ Resource, an invaluable source of advice on how to support an employee experiencing mental ill health
